Michelle is diagnosed with Angelmen's Syndrome. The
condition has left Michelle non-verbal and has only allowed her to
develop mentally to 15 months old.
"By setting limitations
on her, I set limitations on my life. Now are learning the ETL
philosophy, I'm participating in life again after 14 years",
says Carol.
Michelle has the opportunity to make her own decisions
about many things such as when to watch television. Because her
abilities have increased, Michelle has gone from a wheelchair to
walking, and the family is planning a trip to Dallas so that Michelle
can ride in an airplane.
ETL focuses on respect for the individual. Just as
families adjust to members of the family, ETL teaches parents and
caregivers to bring about positive change in the environment, system,
relationships, etc., thereby increasing the quality of life for the
whole family.
"Because Michelle didn't
talk, I stopped talking. ETL taught me that I need to input so Michelle
can output," says Carol, Michelle's mother.
"I respect Michelle as
herself. She deserves respect despite her challenges. Since she gives me
unconditional love, the least I can do is return it." says
Michelle's mother, Carol.
